Position Overview:

Under the guidance of the Nuclear Medicine Manager and/or Assistant Chief Technologist, the Nuclear Medicine Imaging Specialist is responsible for executing a diverse range of technical and professional tasks using sophisticated imaging technology to generate high-quality images for interpretation by the nuclear physician. All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with departmental and organizational policies and procedures, promoting excellence in service during all interactions as outlined in the Key Behaviors of the YNHH Core Success Factors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 1. Imaging Procedures: Conduct high-quality dynamic, static, and gated SPECT and PET imaging procedures while adhering to age-specific standards to obtain the necessary diagnostic information for the referring physician.
    • 1.1 Operate various SPECT and PET/CT cameras and computers according to established departmental protocols to produce images of exceptional diagnostic quality.
  • 2. Radiopharmacy Duties: Perform essential radiopharmacy tasks including the receipt, preparation, administration, and storage of radionuclides and radiopharmaceuticals, ensuring the safety and integrity of the materials used.
    • 2.1 Acquire radionuclides through generator systems or bulk shipments while maintaining sterile techniques and proper shielding, ensuring all radioactive materials are checked for leakage and activity.
  • 3. Quality Control: Execute Quality Control procedures as per departmental protocols to achieve the desired outcomes.
    • 3.1 Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of all departmental QC procedures for general and PET nuclear medicine.
  • 4. Equipment Maintenance: Conduct quality control procedures to guarantee optimal performance of gamma cameras, computers, and auxiliary equipment.
    • 4.1 Perform daily, weekly, and monthly quality control checks on all instruments to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • 5. Safety Practices: Adhere to safe handling protocols for radioactive materials in compliance with departmental and federal regulations to minimize radiation exposure.
    • 5.1 Follow ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) guidelines for radiation exposure.
  • 6. Timely Task Execution: Complete job-related tasks promptly to meet departmental objectives.
    • 6.1 Schedule patients for procedures and monitor their arrival and completion status.
  • 7. Professional Conduct: Exhibit commitment to colleagues, the department, and the hospital through adherence to professional standards, facilitating smooth departmental operations.
    • 7.1 Recognize and undertake necessary duties to support team efficiency.

Qualifications:

Education: Graduation from an A.M.A. accredited Nuclear Medicine program. An Associate's degree is required; a Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Experience: Proven technical skills to meet entry-level standards in routine Nuclear Medicine imaging. NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification in Nuclear Medicine Technology is required.

Licensure: ARRT (N) or NMTCB certification.

Special Skills: Basic knowledge of radiopharmaceuticals, nuclear medicine equipment, and imaging procedures is essential. Above-average understanding of anatomy, computer/PACS applications, along with strong organizational and communication skills, is expected.

Physical Demands: Must be capable of lifting a minimum of 40 pounds to assist with patient transfers.
