Registered Nurse Unit Leader

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Registered Nurse Unit Leader is responsible for overseeing the management and direction of a designated nursing unit. This role involves assessing available resources and delegating tasks effectively to ensure optimal care outcomes. The Unit Leader also directs and executes the nursing process, which encompasses systematic data collection, evaluation, care plan development, implementation, and revision.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIESFacilitating Comprehensive Care Planning
  • Systematically gathers data using the MDS regarding residents through interviews, observations, discussions with physicians, and medical record reviews.
  • Evaluates residents and applies expertise to create the most effective therapeutic care plans, utilizing nursing diagnoses as necessary.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to develop care plans using the CAAS.
  • Implements care plans by assigning responsibilities, establishing communication systems, and monitoring outcomes.
  • Participates in care conferences to address the needs of residents and their families.
  • Monitors changes in resident conditions and updates care plans accordingly.
  • Supervises the completion of functional care plans by nursing staff.
Adhering to Nursing Policies and Regulations
  • Maintains knowledge of and complies with residents' rights.
  • Utilizes established standards of care and specific policies to perform nursing procedures.
  • Encourages resident autonomy in decision-making whenever feasible.
  • Promotes the Continuous Quality Improvement program within the facility.
  • Participates in recommending changes to nursing administration that impact resident care.
  • Engages in ongoing education to enhance skills in gerontological nursing.
  • Administers lab tests or delegates this responsibility as appropriate.
Supervising Nursing Staff
  • Clearly communicates expectations and delegates tasks to nursing staff.
  • Follows up on assigned tasks to ensure completion.
  • Conducts performance evaluations as directed.
  • Assesses the knowledge and skills of nursing personnel to ensure safe practices.
  • Addresses unprofessional behavior among staff as necessary.
  • Prioritizes and adjusts work assignments based on staffing levels and resident care needs.
  • Takes action to maintain appropriate staffing levels, which may include working as a staff nurse.
  • Understands and implements emergency plans as required.
  • Available for designated weekends and on-call duties as assigned.
Maintaining Documentation Standards
  • Completes documentation in line with health information standards and facility policies.
  • Systematically collects and communicates resident assessment data.
  • Documents data on admissions and discharges accurately.
  • Facilitates physician orders and ensures proper follow-up procedures.
  • Initiates reports and documents nursing orders as needed.
  • Provides clear reports to nursing assistants and other staff regarding resident care needs.
  • Follows up on recommendations from dietitians.
Complying with Pharmaceutical Policies
  • Administers medications accurately and follows established protocols.
  • Aims to maintain a 95% accuracy rate in medication administration.
  • Handles medication sign-outs according to policy.
  • Reviews medication and treatment records monthly.
  • Adheres to proper procedures for label changes and emergency kits.
  • Follows controlled substance policies diligently.
  • Coordinates the destruction of controlled medications with appropriate personnel.

  • Identifies areas for improvement through surveys and communicates findings in meetings.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse in the State of Minnesota is required.
  • Certification in CPR and emergency care for healthcare providers is preferred.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must pass a criminal background check as per state guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in healthcare settings, skilled nursing facilities, or assisted living communities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing is preferred.
