Job Summary

This position is located at the District Five Headquarters Shop in Hutchinson, Kansas. The successful candidate will provide skilled mechanical work for the maintenance and repair of equipment in support of KDOT's construction and maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a full-range mechanical overhaul and repair of light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including occasional repairs in the field.
  • Diagnose malfunctions and troubleshoot complex systems, including hydraulics and pneumatics systems.
  • Make working diagnoses of mechanic failure using specialized testing equipment and visual or auditory checks.
  • Perform tune-up, electrical repairs, and maintenance/adjustment on both automotive and heavy-duty equipment.
Requirements
  • Six months of experience in automotive and/or diesel mechanics to meet the needs of the agency.
  • Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Transcripts are required for education to be considered.
  • Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three to five years of experience working as a mechanic or one year of vocational education directly related to this position.
  • Team-oriented ability to perform work that requires moderate physical exertion.
  • Experience with the maintenance and repair of heavy gasoline or diesel-powered equipment used in construction and maintenance activities or other comparable physical settings.
Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements
  • A CDL must be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained. KDOT provides CDL training at no cost to the employee.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment physical testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
  • The selected candidate for this position will be expected to have their own hand tools to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • This CDL position is subject to drug and alcohol testing under the authority of the US Department of Transportation.
