Responsibilities:
  • Provide high-quality, practical, and compassionate veterinary care to animals in accordance with shelter medicine principles and best practices.
  • Diagnose and treat patients with timely recognition of conditions requiring care through our Animal Hospital.
  • Maintain close communication with veterinary colleagues in other ASPCA programs, including our Animal Hospital, Community Medicine, Animal Recovery Center, Canine Annex for Rehabilitation and Enrichment, and Kitten Nursery staff.
  • Ensure that in-house and foster animals receive medical exams upon admission and are provided with ongoing care as appropriate.
  • Create Certificate of Veterinary Inspections (CVI) for animals being transported interstate.
  • Participate in daily Medical-Behavior-Sheltering rounds to assess individual patients and the population, and implement treatment/intervention recommendations in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure effective use of quarantine and isolation spaces to manage herd health, and adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
  • Follow and enforce all written and verbally communicated ASPCA Adoptions SOPs.
  • Offer input and feedback on medical protocols and standards of care.
  • Obtain continuing education as required by ASPCA and state licensing board.
  • Follow and provide input to written materials (protocols, information sheets, data sheets, etc.).
  • Provide medical information and representation to other ASPCA departments, public, and media.
  • Deploy with other ASPCA teams, including Community Engagement, Community Medicine, National Field Response, and the Cruelty Recovery Center, per availability and programmatic needs.
Requirements:
  • Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical practice experience, with a focus on shelter medicine.
  • Strong clinical skills, including efficient diagnosis and treatment of cats and dogs for a variety of medical conditions.
  • Ability to work efficiently and calmly in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven low-stress animal handling and restraint skills.
  • Ability to teach and coach others.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Fear Free certified or completed within 60 days of employment.
