Pharmacy Technician

The Pharmacy Technician, under the Pharmacist's supervision and according to established policies and procedures, assists with the medication distribution system. This role requires strong organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
Essential Job Functions- Fills new medication orders and cassettes and prepares for Pharmacist's review.
- Assists in reconciliation of missing orders and doses and completes required documentation.
- Delivers and retrieves medications to and from patient care areas.
- Delivers medications to appropriate storage area on the nursing unit, including patients rooms, and retrieves discontinued and discharged patient's medication from nursing unit and returns to Rx.
- Delivers stock medications and places in appropriate storage location.
- Maintains patient transfers, discharges, and medication returns to their proper locations.
- Exchanges medication cassettes daily.
- Completes all assigned charging and crediting functions, including from miscellaneous sources.
- Prepackages medications, such as oral liquids, simple batch compounding, and starter doses for review.
- Restocks automated dispensing cabinets, such as Omnicell machines.
- Utilizes Pharmacy operating system, such as Cerner.
- Operates and maintains robot for first doses and cart-fill process.
- Uses tube system, secure transaction function, and do not tube list.
- Stocks medications to their appropriate locations, rotates stock as necessary and checks outdates, and assists in maintaining adequate stock levels.
- Maintains assigned inspection section and checks outdates monthly.
- Fills emergency trays, anesthesia trays, ancillary dept. stock requests, and various medication boxes.
- Facilitates communication within the Pharmacy.
- Answers telephone and triages calls to appropriate person.
- Monitors Pharmacy Window and assists customers according to their need.
- Staffs the IV Room when necessary.
- Prior completion of department IV training and competency.
- Prepares IV medications and parenteral nutrition (TPN) utilizing USP 797 and 800 guidelines for review.
- Labels pre-mixed IV meds and batch prep mini bag plus IV meds for pharmacist's review.
- Manages adequate inventory levels.
- Maintains Clean Room environment per policy and procedure as well as USP 797 and 800 guidelines.
- Follows Quality Assurance protocols, such as temp/humidity monitoring, hood cleaning, hand washing, and proper garb for clean room.
- Demonstrates skill and proficiency to be scheduled IV shift on weekend/holiday.
- Thoroughly trained in all aspects of the basic tech functions/duties.
- Robot: thoroughly understands cart-fill process including updates and patient transfers/discharges; troubleshoots problems/issues.
- Omnicell machines: manages return bin function and be able to troubleshoot problems/issues.
- Assists Pharmacist in filling outpatient prescriptions as necessary.
- Operates packaging machines, which requires knowledge of machine set-up, reports, and trouble-shooting.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
- Preferred Qualifications: Pharmacy Technician Certification, One (1) year prior Hospital Pharmacy Technician experience.
- License, Certification & Clearances: Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system.
Effective March 2020 or during pandemic: goggles, face shield and mask are required according to CDC guidelines. When lift requirement is in excess of 50#, lift assistance (2 person) and/or transfer device is required.
