General Overview

Conduct a range of routine and intricate technical tasks in laboratory testing to gather data essential for diagnosing and treating diseases. Responsibilities may vary based on the laboratory and typically include a combination of the following duties:

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee, execute, and potentially supervise various routine and complex tests.
  • Perform additional related tasks as necessary.
  • Organize and schedule work for the team, ensuring equitable distribution of tests in clinical laboratories using standard techniques and equipment; handle specimens, utilize both manual and automated equipment for testing, and conduct and report analytical tests.
  • Operate sophisticated or computerized instruments.
  • Calibrate, maintain, adjust, and troubleshoot/repair instruments following standard operating procedures and expertise.
  • Manage the processing of patient samples or perform processing as required based on staffing levels, using appropriate identification methods and written protocols to guarantee quality material for testing.
  • Provide advanced problem-solving, troubleshooting, interpretation, and consultation, verifying specimen quality and test outcomes.
  • Communicate issues to relevant personnel.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment.
  • May coordinate and conduct validation testing related to the development of new laboratory tests and techniques.
  • Review and prepare documentation and cases for laboratory inspections.
  • Facilitate participation in laboratory inspections and collaborate with inspectors.
  • Report any non-compliance issues to senior staff.
  • Conduct proficiency testing as required to ensure compliance with regulatory bodies.
  • Monitor quality control and assurance procedures to ensure adherence to internal and external regulations.
  • Maintain quality control programs.
  • Identify, respond to, and report issues as necessary.
  • Ensure remedial actions are documented when test systems deviate from established performance standards.
  • Confirm that patient results are not reported until corrective actions have been implemented and the test system is functioning correctly.
  • Review written procedures and policies for accuracy and submit changes to management.
  • Collaborate with management to initiate projects and develop action plans aimed at enhancing unit performance through Process Improvement (PI) initiatives.
  • Understand, comply with, and execute all necessary safety protocols.
  • Maintain compliance with safety training and report all safety incidents promptly.
  • Attend all laboratory meetings and safety training as required.
  • Comply with competency assessments for laboratory staff.
  • Train new personnel.
  • Serve as a resource and role model as per guidelines established by laboratory management.
  • Adhere to laboratory training programs.
  • Provide technical guidance and instruction to students, interns, residents, staff, and other employees.
  • May oversee workflow, assess staffing levels, and reassign tasks as needed.
  • Follow up to ensure work completion, utilizing behaviors that support the achievement of balanced scorecard targets and uphold Duke University Health System values.
  • Consistently collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues to ensure efficient workflow.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to make independent decisions on significant matters, free from immediate supervision, within the scope of responsibilities.

Level Characteristics

Advancement to this level is contingent upon successful completion of leadership activities within the Clinical Ladder, requiring annual maintenance. Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology. Generalist certification is required for general labs, while generalist/specialty certification is necessary for specialty labs. Minimum educational or experience requirements may be adjusted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) director, provided that minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks performed.

Experience

A minimum of five years of experience (including one year at Duke) with generalist/specialty certification.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Generalist/Specialty Certification from a nationally recognized board/agency (required). Certification may vary depending on the laboratory. A Master's degree in Science may substitute for certification in the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory.
