Job Description

At Project Open Hand, we are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Porter II to join our team of culinary professionals. As a Porter II, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our kitchen, working closely with junior staff and volunteers to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead by example, sharing knowledge and expertise with junior staff and volunteers to ensure seamless kitchen operations.
  • Adhere to kitchen department rules, policies, and procedures, maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Set up, break down, maintain, and fully clean the dish machine, sinks, and other porter machinery, ensuring optimal performance and hygiene.
  • Monitor and maintain sanitizer levels, taking temperature readings as required.
  • Remove trash, cardboard, compost, and recycled materials from the kitchen, maintaining a clean and organized workspace.
  • Clean, sanitize, maintain, and replace all assigned equipment, ensuring it is in good working condition.
  • Perform laundry services, adhering to quality standards and deadlines.
  • Follow the posted master cleaning list, completing side jobs as assigned and maintaining a clean work area.
  • Set up, maintain, and break down staff and volunteer dining areas, ensuring all utensils are clean and ready for use.
  • Properly fill out food service and inventory logs, adhering to HACCP guidelines.
  • Assist with simple kitchen tasks, production, and packing line as needed, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
  • Execute food preparation and cooking tasks as assigned, following established protocols and guidelines.
  • Facilitate a harmonious and positive work experience, interacting with and working alongside peers and volunteers to achieve departmental goals.
  • Attend kitchen trainings and agency meetings, staying up-to-date on the latest procedures and best practices.
  • Complete other kitchen tasks as assigned, demonstrating a commitment to excellence and teamwork.

Requirements:

  • A commitment to Project Open Hand's mission and operating principles.
  • 1+ years of professional commercial, industrial, or production kitchen experience, including high-volume meal production.
  • A desire to be part of a cohesive team, with the ability to share knowledge, answer questions, and clarify processes while working alongside junior staff and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to and share information about kitchen department rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to take direction, give feedback, lead by example, and take responsibility for actions.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in English to facilitate communications with volunteers, peers, and leadership in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely handle, clean, and share best practices regarding the proper handling and cleaning of knives and other large commercial kitchen food preparation equipment.
  • Ability to maintain CA food handling certification.
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, afternoons, weekends, or holidays to meet demands.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish or Tagalog.

Physical Demands: While performing duties of job, incumbent is required to stand for long periods of time and move; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Employee must bend, stoop, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted on a regular basis. Employee must be able to move fully loaded carts from floor to floor for storage on a regular basis. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The noise level in the work environment will consistently vary from moderate to loud. The work environment will be ever-changing with volunteers and staff members all sharing limited space and working together in the Kitchen. The work environment will consistently have wet floors, temperature extremes, moving objects, and loud noises.
