At National Grid USA, we're committed to delivering 100% fossil-free heat to our customers by 2050. As a key player in this mission, we're seeking a highly skilled Lead Electrical Planning and Design Engineer to join our team.

The successful candidate will work closely with our engineering, design, operations, and construction teams to develop and maintain standards, electrical operating procedures, and material specifications for transmission line work. This will involve leading the development of technical content and implementing National Grid's Transmission Engineering and Design philosophy, standards, guidelines, and procedures.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Leading the development of technical content and implementation of National Grid's Transmission Engineering and Design philosophy, standards, guidelines, and procedures;
  • Providing technical support to various departments, including Engineering, Design, Operations, and Construction;
  • Reviewing, revising, and developing electrical operating procedures (EOPs) for the construction, maintenance, or operating of the electrical system;
  • Identifying, investigating, and qualifying approved manufacturers of equipment and monitoring their performance, reliability, service, representation, and contribution to the industry;
  • Engaging Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in technical discussions to facilitate the development of standards and trainings;
  • Attending and participating in conferences and seminars to stay up-to-date on new technologies and industry standards;
  • Investigating equipment problems and failures with manufacturers and vendors, and providing recommendations for corrective and preventative actions;
  • Researching and supporting the adoption of new and innovative technologies for the transmission line business;
  • Supporting all requests for incident analysis (IAs) as a team member and completing assigned action items;
  • Traveling as required to support manufacturer qualifications and conference participation;
  • Preparing comprehensive written and oral reports of technical problems, investigative findings, and engineering recommendations;
  • Participating in emergency storm response as needed.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you'll need:
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering school;
  • A minimum of 6 years' experience (10+ years preferred) in an engineering field, preferably Transmission Engineering;
  • Experience with transmission design software, including PLS, CADD, PLS POLE, and MFAD;
  • A working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current electrical design codes, especially the National Electric Safety Code (NESC);
  • A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record that meets National Grid's Safe Driver Policy;
  • The ability to travel throughout service territories and work extended hours when required.
