Key Responsibilities:

  • Effectively operates ultrasound machinery to conduct general, vascular, and/or cardiac examinations. Accurately distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Reviews patient medical histories to gather essential clinical information, including patient background, laboratory results, and physician directives, ensuring accuracy in examinations.
  • Positions patients appropriately and selects the correct transducer and technical parameters for precise ultrasound imaging. Adjusts settings to achieve optimal images while ensuring patient safety and comfort.
  • Utilizes cognitive sonographic skills to identify, document, and modify procedures based on anatomical and diagnostic information.
  • Accurately labels images with patient identifiers, including name, medical record unit (MRU) number, and scan location.
  • Maintains records in compliance with regulatory standards and inputs patient and study data into the radiology information system, documenting billing codes for accurate patient charges.
  • Identifies equipment performance issues, communicates with relevant personnel, and assesses new products and equipment for potential future implementation.
  • Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic data and medical history, and conveys findings to the appropriate physician.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, assessing data reflective of patient status and interpreting information to meet each patient's specific needs.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Requirements:
  • Medical Sonographer (RDMS) registration with Abdomen from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) to be obtained within 3 months unless exempted by department leadership.
  • Medical Sonographer (RDMS) registration with OB/GYN from ARDMS to be obtained within 3 months unless exempted by department leadership.
  • Vascular Technologist (RVT) registration from ARDMS to be obtained within 3 months unless exempted by department leadership.
  • Vascular Sonography (VS) registration from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) to be obtained within 3 months unless exempted by department leadership.
  • Vascular Specialist (RVS) registration from Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) to be obtained within 3 months unless exempted by department leadership.
  • Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS-AE) registration with Adult Echo from ARDMS to be obtained within 18 months unless exempted by department leadership.
  • Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) registration from CCI to be obtained within 18 months unless exempted by department leadership.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association (AHA) to be obtained within 6 months.

Educational Background:
  • Completion of an accredited or approved Sonography program beyond high school.

Experience:
  • No prior experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Competency in all general and/or vascular sonographic procedures routinely performed in the department.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to accurately differentiate between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Familiarity with aseptic techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with patients and caregivers.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to departmental and organizational policies and protocols.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and manage multiple assignments.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and adaptability to changing circumstances.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Must be capable of sitting, standing, walking, lifting, squatting, bending, and twisting throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to:
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
  • Lift up to 20 lbs. overhead.
  • Carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
  • Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with assistance.
  • Must possess clear speech, vision, and hearing capabilities.
  • May encounter mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards, as well as exposure to blood and body fluids; personal protective equipment must be utilized as necessary.
  • Operates all necessary equipment to fulfill job responsibilities.
