Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

About the RoleThis position provides individualized and recreation-based therapeutic services to Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare patients as a purposeful intervention to facilitate physical, emotional, cognitive and social growth.
Responsibilities- Evaluates patient's status to determine and develop an effective therapeutic plan.
- Assesses the patient's leisure, social and recreational abilities, leisure needs, interests, barriers, life experiences and potential to determine appropriate programming.
- Develops patient treatment goals with specified measures based on outcome of assessment.
- Establish individualized treatment plan to include recommended interventions, education, re-evaluation of needs and long-term goals.
- Provides appropriate interventions to facilitate therapeutic recreation services.
- Provides treatment services for the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for independent leisure/social involvement, community adjustment, decision-making and appropriate use of free time to insure quality Therapeutic Recreation services.
- Completes documentation within the timeframe protocol for assigned work area.
- Identify and address secondary patient barriers to leisure participation through education materials, referral resources or as a treatment intervention.
- Explore and trial use of appropriate new adaptive leisure equipment in order to meet patients treatment goals and share equipment information with TR staff.
- Serves as a resource to staff by providing information on therapeutic leisure and social opportunities and interventions.
- Participates in interdisciplinary meetings to communicate information, identifies needs and coordinates service delivery.
- Respects and uses expertise of other team members and accepts fair share of work load.
- Supports the family and patient by providing focused patient/family care.
- Supports the family as having the central role in the child's life.
- Interacts with families in ways that show sensitivity and respect for diverse family styles, cultural values and belief systems.
- Assists the patient and family in preparing and generalizing skills learned to home and community settings.
- Available as a resource to families.
- Applies knowledge of growth and development and age appropriateness in providing leisure resources and conveying information to staff.
- Required
- Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation
- CTRS Certification, or must be obtain by 90 days of hire
- Current knowledge related to adapted leisure equipment
- Current CPR certification (BLS through American Heart Association) or must obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
- Preferred experience working with a wide range of patient populations, especially patients with short-term or long-term disabilities
