About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Mine Planning Engineer to join our team at Rio Tinto Kennecott. As a key member of our Mine Planning team, you will play a critical role in developing and communicating mine plans to key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement mine plans to optimize production and minimize costs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure mine plans are integrated across the business.
  • Utilize mine planning and scheduling tools to create optimal mine designs and schedules.
  • Develop underlying assumptions for incorporation into business plans and forecasting.
  • Effectively communicate mine plans to allow management to make informed decisions.
  • Work with Geotech and Geology personnel to ensure safe and optimal mine designs.
  • Communicate with management on progress of planning and design as well as special projects.
  • Interact with Mine Operations to better consider their needs while communicating the requirements of the mine plans.
  • Support the mid-range and strategic planning team in the development of life-of-mine plans and strategies to maximize value of the Bingham Canyon resource and mitigate business risk.
  • Develop material delivery sequences, mine fleet requirements, and estimates for capital and operating costs suitable for inclusion into mining studies and life-of-mine plans.
  • Develop mine plans and waste dump plans at the appropriate level of detail to optimize both short- and long-term objectives.
Requirements
  • B.S. Degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3+ years' experience working in a large open-pit mine environment as a mine planner or similar role.
  • Ability to understand and communicate technical problems.
  • Requires reasoning and critical thinking.
  • Ability to work in cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure mine plans are integrated across ore body knowledge and the business.
  • Experience working on technical mining projects.
  • Requires a proven ability to operate independently and in small multi-discipline teams.
  • Excellent planning, time organization, and problem-solving skills a must.
  • Record of strong safety performance and familiarity with implementing established safety systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Minesight (Atlas and MSSO) or similar mine design program.
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office.
