Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) is seeking a highly skilled Public Safety Officer II to join its Public Safety Department. As a valued member of the RISD community, this position plays a critical role in maintaining a safe campus environment and supporting the educational mission of the College.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of all campus security posts and properties, conducting effective security patrols to deter and detect unsafe or criminal activity.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, providing emergency medical care as required, and employ appropriate techniques to deal with individuals in mental distress or under the influence of substances.
  • Proactively respond to calls for service, including lock-outs, fire alarms, and other incidents, conducting initial incident investigations and gathering information from witnesses, victims, and suspects.
  • Perform periodic inspections of systems and facilities, ensuring proper function and preventing failure, and work assignments in the Dispatch center and fixed security posts.
  • Effectively operate and maintain all assigned equipment, including radios, uniforms, computers, vehicles, and medical supplies.
  • Actively participate in college events to foster relationships between the Department and members of the RISD community.
Requirements
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check, physical and psychological examinations, insurance and driver's record check, and National Crime Records check, and be fingerprinted.
  • The incumbent must become a State of RI licensed EMT and complete the RI College & University Public Safety Training Academy within two years of hire.
  • Must complete Field Training and Evaluation Program, including training in CPR/First Aid, safe driving practices, OC spray, defensive tactics, expandable batons, and handcuffing procedures.
  • Ability to function independently, with moderate supervision, completing assigned work in a timely manner, and prioritize based on emerging circumstances and changing priorities.
  • Must work well under stressful conditions and possess strong human relations skills, interacting with community members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be able to provide clear and professional verbal communication via radio and telephone to responding emergency agencies and other officers.
  • A High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required, with a minimum of one to two years of security employment, formal security training, or related experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • EMT Certification and two years of EMT experience is preferred but not required at time of hire.
Work Schedule and Benefits

40 hours per week, 12 months per year, with shift and days off assigned once hired. Full-time, Non-Exempt position with a salary grade of 815NE. The successful candidate will be required to meet our pre-employment background screening requirements.
