About the Role

As a Lifeguard with the YMCA of Southern Maine, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our members and guests. Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, you will be responsible for supervising the pool environment, providing safety instructions, recognizing and responding to emergencies, and rendering CPR and first aid in accordance with YMCA policies.

Responsibilities

  • Programming: You will follow and support all Association protocols and priorities, as well as State guidelines, and adhere to all Y Brand guidelines. You will regularly support programming by guarding, performing "off scan" duties, such as water chemistry tests, and taking corrective action based on test results.
  • Leadership: You will be a collaborative, engaged, and active participant in our Association, communicating effectively and making sound decisions.
  • Relationship Building: You will develop positive, authentic relationships within the Y, leading to greater awareness of the Y's mission and impact, growth in the number of people served, and revenue.
  • Personal Growth: You will maintain a high degree of emotional maturity and interpersonal skills, committed to personal growth and skill acquisition.
  • Operations & Safety: You will maintain rescue readiness at all times, focusing on protecting and aggressively scanning the entire area of responsibility. You will consistently enforce non-swimmer protection and safety rules, taking immediate corrective action when swimmers break rules or engage in risky behavior.
  • Mission Advancement: You will be an advocate for the Y, promoting our cause and supporting philanthropy by increasing awareness about the annual campaign within the Y community.
  • Data Tracking & Documentation: You will maintain accurate and consistent data tracking and documentation, as required.
Requirements
  • 16 years of age or older
  • Certifications including: Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Basic First Aid
  • Strong swimming skills
  • Ability to travel locally
  • Criminal background check required, including fingerprinting through the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), prior to hire
  • The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
Compensation

$16.00 - $17.00/hour, depending on experience
