Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Legal Aid Bureau is seeking three (3) full-time general practice attorneys for its operations. These attorneys will manage all aspects of casework, from initial client engagement to representation in relevant legal proceedings. Collaboration with other legal professionals, including law graduates and paralegals, is expected. Attorneys will maintain case files according to Bureau standards and may participate in community outreach initiatives aimed at identifying clients requiring legal representation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess client eligibility and provide appropriate referrals.
  • Conduct initial and follow-up interviews with clients.
  • Perform factual investigations and legal research.
  • Inform clients about the outcomes of investigations and provide guidance on their options.
  • Draft legal documents, including complaints and responses.
  • Prepare legal memoranda and briefs.
  • Formulate case strategies for effective client representation.
  • Represent clients in negotiations, hearings, trials, and administrative proceedings.
  • Manage full representation in eviction cases, including communication with clients and administrative agencies.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through training and educational programs.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned within the role's essential functions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Licensed to practice in the State of Maryland or eligible for admission.
  • Understanding of civil law principles and judicial procedures.
  • Proficient in using computer applications, including Office 365.
  • Strong research, analytical, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Preferred experience of three (3) to five (5) years post-bar admission.
  • Commitment to providing quality legal advocacy for a diverse clientele.
  • Willingness to travel locally and regionally as required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is primarily conducted in an office setting with regular communication through various channels, including phone and video conferencing. Some responsibilities may occur in community settings.
