The Short Order Culinary Specialist is responsible for preparing high-quality hot food items, as well as reheating and reconstituting meals for patients, staff, and visitors, adhering to specific procedures and maintaining appropriate quantities for daily service.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparation and Setup: Organizes the food preparation area with the necessary food items and equipment to ensure an efficient workflow. Actively participates in Culinary Planning Meetings, maintaining attendance standards as observed by management.
  • Food Production: Prepares high-quality grilled, sautéed, and fried food items based on meal tickets or customer requests, following established procedures. Ensures proper reheating and plating techniques are applied, adhering to portion control and garnishing guidelines. Effectively manages timing and prioritizes orders to meet service timelines.
  • Equipment Operation: Demonstrates proficiency in the operation, care, and maintenance of kitchen equipment, including grills, fryers, ovens, and stoves.
  • Food Safety Compliance: Upholds food safety standards by applying correct principles and techniques relevant to short order cooking. Utilizes calibrated thermometers to verify cooking temperatures and takes corrective actions when necessary. Maintains proper labeling, dating, and storage of food items, and follows FIFO stock rotation policies.
  • Training and Mentorship: Provides on-the-job training for new kitchen staff, fostering their development and acting as a role model. Utilizes knowledge of kitchen procedures to resolve issues and meet customer needs, assisting management with in-service training as required.
  • Sanitation Practices: Adheres to established sanitation and personal hygiene protocols to prevent foodborne illnesses. Maintains a clean work environment by following the 'clean as you go' policy and practicing proper handwashing techniques.

Qualifications:

Education:
High School Diploma or GED preferred. Completion of Culinary Basic Skills Training and Safe Food Handler Training Program is advantageous. Graduation from an accredited two-year culinary program is preferred.

Experience:
Completion of a Short Order Cook Trainee program or two years of experience as a Grill (Short Order) Cook is required. Experience in food preparation within an acute care setting is desirable.

Special Skills:
Strong oral communication skills are essential. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to read, write, and understand English effectively to communicate with the Food Prep Team. Outstanding customer service skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and prioritize tasks to ensure optimal patient care and service delivery.

Physical Demands:


This position requires moderate physical activity, including the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, and to lift, push, and pull food supplies and equipment (occasionally up to 50 pounds, frequently up to 30 pounds, and/or continuously up to 10 pounds). The work environment may involve exposure to various elements, such as extreme temperatures and cleaning chemicals, necessitating adherence to safety precautions and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as provided.
