General Overview:

The City of Ames is actively seeking candidates to establish a Civil Service eligibility list for the GIS Specialist role. This list will remain valid for one year and may be utilized to fill multiple vacancies. Candidates with prior Civil Service status in this classification are encouraged to apply.


Key Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of the GIS Coordinator, the selected candidate will:

  • Develop and maintain GIS data relevant to Public Works, including pavement management, water distribution, and traffic networks.
  • Collaborate with Public Works staff and other departments to enhance the GIS system, primarily utilizing ESRI software.
  • Address GIS-related inquiries from both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Engage in various engineering and GIS-related analyses, cartography, and data collection.

Qualifications:

Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Computer Science, GIS, Engineering, or a related field, along with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience. Professional knowledge of GIS applications and principles is preferred. Certifications such as GISP or ASPRS, as well as ESRI technical certification, are advantageous.


Skills and Abilities:

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Extensive knowledge of GIS technology and principles.
  • Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise and related software.
  • Experience with spatial database management and GIS application development.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret spatial data and generate reports.
  • Effective communication skills to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Working Environment:

This position involves primarily sedentary work, with occasional exposure to various environmental conditions. The candidate will utilize computer equipment and specialized GIS tools to perform job functions.
