Position Overview:

The Auditor-Controller's Office serves as the primary accounting entity for Humboldt County. The Senior Accountant-Auditor plays a pivotal role within this office, becoming a subject matter expert in specific operational areas.

Key Responsibilities:
In this role, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
  • Conducting reconciliations
  • Maintaining the general ledger
  • Preparing financial reports
  • Participating in audits
  • Providing leadership and mentorship

Work Environment:
The position is based in the Humboldt County Courthouse, within the Office of the Auditor-Controller. The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM, with a one-hour lunch break.

Role Distinctions:
This position represents the advanced specialist level within the accountant/auditor series. Individuals in this role exercise considerable independent judgment on a range of specialized projects, holding significant accountability and decision-making responsibilities.

Examples of Duties:
  • Provide leadership, training, and oversight to professional and support staff.
  • Contribute to selection processes, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
  • Prepare and maintain accounting records for various transactions and accounts; generate trial balances and financial statements.
  • Coordinate month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Prepare journal entries and conduct periodic reconciliations of accounts.
  • Compile financial statements and maintain budgetary control accounts.
  • Review and adjust budgets for County and special district funds.
  • Audit departmental records for compliance with fiscal policies.
  • Calculate and allocate tax revenues appropriately.
  • Review claims for tax revenue referral and prepare reimbursement claims.
  • Compute tax rates for County and educational districts.
  • Conduct special accounting studies related to County finances.
  • Analyze programs and legislation for fiscal impact; prepare budgetary transfers.
  • Recommend modifications to accounting systems and procedures.
