Job Summary

This position is located within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), ICE Health Services Corps (IHSC).

The Staff Dentist will provide general dentistry services to a detainee population, including preventive modalities and patient oral health literacy education, pre-treatment health assessment, and emphasis on oral surgery.

Responsibilities
  • Use clinical skills in oral surgery, including surgical extractions of erupted teeth, administering anesthesia, monitoring vital signs, alveoloplasty, removal of impacted teeth, biopsies, and soft tissue surgery.
  • Examine patients, utilize diagnostic equipment as appropriate, interpreting results for diagnosis.
  • Establish priority of care and performing necessary treatment based upon established diagnoses, including follow-up care as indicated.
  • Provide general dentistry services, including preventive modalities and patient oral health literacy education, pre-treatment health assessment, and emphasis on oral surgery.
  • Prescribe and/or dispense appropriate medication to patients.
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Must successfully pass a drug screen.
  • Males born after 12/31/59 must certify registration with Selective Service.
Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the Basic AND Minimum Qualification requirements as noted below.

  • BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
    • Successfully completed a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) and the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
    • Successfully passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
    • Must have one or more full years of experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing professional dentistry work for GS-12 level and above assignments.
    • Be able to distinguish shades of color.
  • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:
    • GS-14: Applicant must demonstrate they possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent public or private sector experience performing the following duties:
      • Performing oral surgery of various types.
      • Working with the infection control process.
      • Managing dental programs with minimal assistance.
      • Providing general dentistry services.
