Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Attendance Counselor to join our team at the Newark Board of Education. The successful candidate will be responsible for promoting school attendance, investigating absences, and determining causes of absence or delinquency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct needs assessments of school attendance and develop improvement plans.
  • Generate daily attendance summary reports and respond promptly to address attendance issues.
  • Investigate and deliver legal notices to students' homes.
  • Enforce corrective actions to improve attendance and punctuality.
  • Appraise principals and the Office of Attendance of attendance trends and extreme cases.
  • Engage families through home visits, phone calls, or other forms of communication to determine reasons for absence.
  • Participate in the Truancy Task Force, patrolling neighborhoods with the Newark Police Department, and transporting truant students to the Task Force location.
  • Prepare social case histories with accurate data and recommendations.
  • Collect data for legal action and appear in court when required.
  • Investigate and gather information for special studies.
  • Collaborate with district leads to support homeless and displaced students.
  • Conduct address verifications and cooperate with public and private welfare agencies.
  • Administer school census and supervise student movement to and from school buses.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Substitution of experience in teaching, guidance counseling, or social work with 30 semester hour credits equal to one year of experience.
  • Valid New Jersey driver's license and ability to travel throughout the City of Newark and surrounding areas.
  • Knowledge of investigation techniques, methods to promote student attendance, and techniques to deal with hostile individuals.
  • Ability to read and interpret laws, rules, and regulations related to school attendance and apply them to specific situations.
  • Ability to conduct investigations, enforce remedial actions, gather information, and prepare reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain records and files, and utilize electronic recording and information systems.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
Working Conditions

The Attendance Counselor will work in a fast-paced environment, interacting with students, parents, and school staff. The position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
