Position Summary

The primary role of the Healthcare Support Nurse is to deliver nursing services, care, and treatment to children and adolescents, adhering to the guidelines set forth by Georgia Community Support and Solutions, Inc. (GCSS) and the State of Georgia Nursing Licensing Bureau.

The nursing services are provided in a short-term crisis facility designed for children with autism spectrum disorders, within a family-oriented environment or community setting. The children and adolescents receiving care will have a diagnosis of intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) alongside co-occurring psychiatric conditions. The Healthcare Support Nurse will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, including Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA), psychiatrists, psychologists, and other relevant service providers, as well as families and various agencies as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the lead staff member of the facility.
  • Oversee the management of the unit.
  • Ensure cleanliness and functionality of equipment.
  • Coordinate nursing care for individuals.
  • Communicate with physicians as necessary to report or clarify medical issues.
  • Complete assigned shifts and ensure proper handover to the incoming nurse, including reporting and managing controlled substances.
  • Provide skilled nursing care and conduct health assessments as required.
  • Administer and supervise medication administration.
  • Ensure adherence to the daily activity schedule, facilitating structured activities for skills training and education.
  • Manage medication oversight functions.
  • Maintain daily operations of the unit during assigned shifts.
  • Promptly inform the Registered Nurse and family of any changes in the individual's condition.
  • Supervise and guide the activities of direct care staff and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs).
  • Ensure a safe and productive environment for clients at all times.
  • Address and resolve issues and concerns that arise within the home to meet individuals' needs effectively.
  • Coordinate with pharmacies to procure medications as needed.
  • Monitor medication administration for individuals receiving services and assist staff with medication-related issues.
  • Participate in staff meetings for crisis home personnel.
  • Meet regularly with the Registered Nurse to discuss and address ongoing issues.
  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring, and training of staff for the crisis homes.
  • Support performance evaluations and disciplinary processes.
  • Review direct care staff documentation and address any discrepancies.
  • Maintain organized and systematic recordkeeping practices.
  • Audit direct care staff records for compliance.
  • Provide consultation on crisis intervention and critical incident support.
  • Complete incident reports within the required timeframe.
  • Manage house funds for recreational activities, documenting expenditures and following administrative finance policies.
  • Collaborate with the Registered Nurse, Program Manager, Case Manager, and Director of Clinical & Crisis Support Services to ensure effective management of the homes.
  • Engage in professional development activities such as conferences and training sessions.
  • Accept additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential job functions effectively. Flexibility in scheduling is required to provide necessary services and support, including 24/7 on-call availability. Candidates should possess the physical stamina to manage periods of intense activity and stress, as well as the ability to lift 50 pounds or more. Willingness to travel independently in rural or remote areas is essential.

Education and Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • At least three years of recent experience supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families.
