This position offers a competitive annual salary based on relevant experience, ranging from $165,000 to $200,000.

Role Summary

ALC is seeking a seasoned social justice attorney to assume a pivotal role within its executive leadership. This position presents a unique opportunity to enhance and expand movement lawyering at a prominent civil rights organization. The Chief Legal Officer will be instrumental in our community lawyering approach, delivering direct legal services while engaging with the community to inform policy advocacy and impact litigation.

In collaboration with organizational leaders, the Chief Legal Officer will spearhead the development of legal strategies that align with our broader advocacy objectives across multiple issue areas, including Community Safety, Immigrant Rights, Workers Rights, Housing Rights, National Security and Civil Rights, and Voting Rights. This role requires the ability to anticipate key legal trends and assess the broader legal landscape that may influence our initiatives.

As a member of the Executive Team, the Chief Legal Officer will set organizational goals and guide resource allocation for legal efforts. Additionally, this role will oversee the enhancement of ALC's infrastructure to ensure robust legal services and impactful litigation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead impact and strategic litigation efforts, including amicus and appellate matters.
  • Supervise a team of legal professionals, providing mentorship and guidance to enhance their skills.
  • Evaluate and improve ALC's integration of direct legal services with impact litigation.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of ALC's practice areas and key legal issues affecting API communities.
  • Oversee case strategy development and legal intake processes.
  • Ensure clarity in roles, goals, and systems for managing impact litigation within the Legal Department.
  • Foster relationships with civil rights, legal aid, and pro bono partners to enhance ALC's legal capacity.
  • Provide legal analysis and articulate ALC's legal perspectives to the public and media.
  • Collaborate with Program Directors to support the professional development of attorneys.

Qualifications

  • J.D. and active membership in the California State Bar.
  • Over 10 years of experience in civil litigation, including trial and appellate processes.
  • Experience in direct legal services is advantageous.
  • Proven management experience in a legal non-profit or social justice organization.
  • Strong understanding of civil rights issues relevant to ALC's mission.
  • Exceptional legal skills with a track record of innovative problem-solving.
  • Experience in community lawyering and empowering grassroots organizations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
