Job Title: School Nurse

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Nurse to join our team at Mason City School District. As a School Nurse, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of our students.

Job Summary:

The School Nurse will provide overall leadership and coordination of the district's health care services. This includes conducting health screenings, maintaining up-to-date health records for students, and providing clinical nursing care services as needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct health screenings and make referrals as appropriate
  • Maintain up-to-date health records for students
  • Assume responsibility for injured or ill students
  • Act as health consultant for teachers, students, and curriculum
  • Act as liaison between school district and the medical community
  • Authorize exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases
  • Dispense medication or delegate according to Ohio Revised Code
  • Administer first aid and be available for emergency medical procedures
  • Assist in disease control programs by enforcing local and state immunization laws
  • Assist with individual health care plans for students with special health care needs
  • Monitor school environment for safety
  • Act as consultant, health educator, and counselor to promote disease prevention and healthy lifestyles
  • Provide leadership for school and community health issues
  • Observe ethics of the nursing profession and exhibit professional behavior
  • Identify nursing tasks appropriate to delegate and provide procedural guidelines
  • Report all cases of child abuse and neglect to the proper authorities
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, and parents
  • Promote good public relations
  • Communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively
  • Purchase all necessary medical supplies, materials, and equipment
  • Coordinate all activities related to the school nursing program
  • Follow nursing procedures as covered by Ohio Revised Code and national standards of school nursing practice
  • Refer students/families to appropriate medical, social, and mental health treatment agencies
  • Communicate with and serve as a consultant for parents, school personnel, and students regarding health needs
  • Communicate with principal/supervisor and teachers regarding health conditions
  • Cooperate with the Local Board of Health in the control and prevention of communicable diseases
  • Implement policy on exclusion and readmission of students
  • Assist teachers in the instruction of health topics
  • Develop and write IHPs as required and assist in developing IEPs as necessary
  • Maintain records as required by law, school policy, and administrative regulations
  • Participate in the development of programs and research
  • Complete required paperwork in a timely fashion
  • Attend in-service programs or workshops related to maintenance of position
  • Engage in crisis prevention intervention and de-escalation strategies as necessary
  • Operate office machines, technology, and equipment appropriate to the position
  • Maintain high standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity in all matters
  • Comply with all Board Policies and Administrative Guidelines
  • Arrive on time to work each regular work day
  • Be in attendance every regular work day, excluding long-term illnesses, medical leaves, and other unique circumstances
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all district, personnel, and student information
  • Be able to be adaptable and flexible with changes, updates, processes, and procedures
  • Perform other tasks consistent with the position as may be assigned by Superintendent and/or designee
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • Registered Nurse (RN) License by the Ohio Board of Nursing
  • Ohio Department of Education Pupil Services/School Nurse License
  • State and Federal Background checks free of infractions as required by Ohio law and Board Policy
  • Ability to provide appropriate references
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in crisis prevention intervention and de-escalation techniques
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Willingness and ability to work as a team member and with the public
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Computer expertise appropriate to the position
  • Effective and demonstrated problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical, oral, and written communication, and organizational skills
  • Valid driver's license and/or provide own transportation
  • History of strong work record, including good job attendance
  • Documented evidence of participation in mandatory annual trainings
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • CPR, first aid, IHPs, IEPs, child development, community health initiatives, public education, board policies and procedures, building policies and procedures, staff handbook, Licensure Code of Professional Conduct for Ohio Educators, appropriate school law, and requirements of the Ohio Board of Nursing and the Ohio Department of Education
  • Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations; follow instructions; communicate effectively; provide consultation; collect and analyze data; plan; schedule; organize; operate office equipment and other related technologies; move/lift moderate amounts of weight up to 50 pounds, and maintain equipment
  • Triage, patient care, consultation, assessment; effective communication; use of computer and appropriate software applications (Microsoft Office or equivalent), printer, and other customary equipment
Equipment Operated:
  • Computer and/or tablet, printer, scanner, filing cabinets, telephone, copier, fax machine, laminator, shredder, calculator, some hands tools, mobility equipment (i.e. wheelchairs, Hoyer lifts, etc.), adaptive equipment and devices, AED, hearing and vision screening machines, and other related medical equipment
Physical and Cognitive Demands:
  • Occasional: Climbing and moving/lifting amounts of weight up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent: Standing, sitting, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching/squatting, bending, twisting/turning, reaching above shoulders, and typing/keyboarding.
  • Continuous: Reading, writing, math, problem-solving, concentration, attention to task, task completion, memory, hearing, seeing, regulating emotions, organizing/planning, and following directions.
Work Environment and Conditions:
  • Occasional: Exposure to moving parts, fumes/airborne particles, toxic/dangerous chemicals, inclement weather driving conditions, loud noise, offensive odors, blood-borne pathogens, contagious diseases, and aberrant and dysfunctional behaviors which could be potentially harmful.
  • Frequent: Exposure to bodily fluids and tissue, students with challenging behavior, and repetitive hand motions.
