Job Summary

As an Instructional Paraprofessional, you will play a vital role in supporting the special education services teacher in providing instructional and support services for maximum student achievement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Special Education Services Teacher: Provide support to the special education services teacher in planning and implementing learning experiences for students, developing a safe and healthy learning environment, and providing small group instruction.
  • Support Student Needs: Assist students with physical needs, including toileting, feeding, and transferring, as well as providing physical intervention when required.
  • Manage Student Behavior: Assist teachers in maintaining discipline and encouraging acceptable student behavior, including crisis intervention when needed.
  • Facilitate Student Learning: Present lessons or portions of lessons to students, check accuracy of work, and present additional assignments as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist with Record Keeping: Assist teachers in keeping routine records related to attendance, grades, test scores, or behavior as assigned.
  • Provide Transportation Support: Assist bus drivers in maintaining discipline and responding to the physical needs of students.
  • Participate in IEP Meetings: Attend IEP meetings, if requested, and maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Perform Other Job-Related Duties: Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Supervisor(s).
Requirements
  • Associate's Degree or Equivalent: Associate's degree or 48 semester hours from an accredited college or a passing score on the ACT WorkKeys Assessment.
  • Ability to Meet Suitability Criteria: Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
  • Relevant Work Experience: Demonstrated success in relevant work experience.
  • Effective Communication Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication with students, parents, and others.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to stand, walk, stoop, assist with student toileting and specific hygiene needs, transfer students, feed students, and provide physical intervention when required.
  • Technology Skills: Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Flexibility: Ability to work flexible hours as needed to provide adult assistance on special education buses.
  • Attendance: Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
