About the Job

The State of Colorado is seeking a highly skilled Criminal Records Technician to join our team. As a key member of our Background Investigation Unit, you will play a critical role in ensuring the health and safety of children in licensed child care facilities across the state.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process background checks for licensed child care facilities and Office of Children Youth Provider Services Unit (OCYF PSU) facilities
  • Independently research, analyze, interpret, and apply statutes, rules, procedures, and practices related to background investigation functions
  • Review and analyze court dispositions to make child care eligibility recommendations
  • Perform confidential background screens using the Trails data system and maintain tracking systems for each screen request
  • Follow specific guidelines to generate responses to each request and respond to inquiries from customers across the country
  • Review Trails data and integrate evaluation results into the unit's data system and generate appropriate responses for release to the requesting party or their designee
  • Review fee deposit activities of other staff to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Educate other units within the department, county departments, other state departments, local agencies, and private individuals on the basic processes underlying the Trails background screening procedures
  • Provide quality customer service by prioritizing emergency or non-standard requests and investigating concerns voiced by constituents
  • Respond to complaints from customers concerning the process and investigate and resolve concerns using independent judgment and professionalism
  • Review and make recommendations to management regarding opportunities for quality improvement to processes and procedures of the Background Investigation Unit
  • Review and evaluate documentation submitted by facilities and individuals for accuracy and completeness to determine whether the documentation is within statutes, rules, regulations, and procedures as well as department requirements
  • Work as part of the Background Investigation Unit team developing procedures, evaluating and improving processes and forms, and producing informational summaries as requested
  • Provide training to department and county staff, and other customers on the processes and procedures involved in the child abuse and neglect, and the criminal background screening functions
Requirements
  • Three years of analytical experience with data systems and multi-relational databases
  • Appropriate education (Associates plus one year of experience or a Bachelor's degree) in criminal justice or a related field will substitute for the required three years of experience
  • Preferred qualifications include experience with administrative and clerical procedures and systems, knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, experience of organizational skills, experience with software and hardware, data systems, multi-relational databases, Internet, e-mail, and other workplace technology and electronic devices, ability to work independently with little or no direction, clear and effective written and oral communication skills, and bilingual ability to fluently speak and write in Spanish
