Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Pest Control Specialist to join our team at the City of Buffalo, NY. As an Exterminator, you will be responsible for eliminating birds, rodents, and common household pests and insects, as well as preventing and destroying small animal nuisances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Eliminate birds, rodents, and common household pests and insects using traps, guns, poison mixtures, and gases
  • Prevent and destroy small animal nuisances by filling up rat holes, enclosing openings in buildings with wire mesh and metal sheeting
  • Capture birds (pigeons) through the use of traps and artificial lofts and deliver them to the city pound for elimination
  • Assist in the removal of animals, including deer
  • Investigate complaints and advise on how to best eliminate conditions found
  • Participate in and complete required number of hours of in-house training in accordance with the Department of Environmental Conservation requirements
  • Maintain records, files, and submit reports as required
  • Drive to and from work sites
Requirements
  • Two years of full-time experience where work involves the preventive and precautionary measures in the elimination of birds, rodents, and/or common household pests and insects
  • Commercial Pesticide Applicator's Certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
  • Current New York State Driver's License
  • Trapping/Nuisance Control License issued by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (for Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets)
  • Gun Permit (for Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Good knowledge of the habits of birds, rodents, and household pests and insects, including nesting, breeding places, and feeding habits
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to get along well with others
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
