Our ICU Specialties:
Cardiothoracic

ICU:

Transplant

ICU:

Operate within a 12-bed critical care facility, the sole ICU in the hospital, catering to a diverse range of patients.

Most patients have received transplanted organs, including kidney, liver, pancreas, intestine, islet cell, or multi-visceral transplants.

We also support patients recovering from orthopedic surgeries, surgical oncology patients undergoing complex abdominal surgeries, and those suffering from multi-system organ failure.

Cardiac

ICU:

The UPMC Presbyterian Cardiac ICU is a 10-bed critical care unit primarily focused on adult patients with acute cardiac conditions.

We adopt a multidisciplinary approach to care, often involving various specialties such as pulmonary, oncology, renal, gastrointestinal, and vascular surgery.

Our patients typically present with conditions like myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, severe heart failure, and life-threatening arrhythmias. The CICU service team includes residents on internal medicine rotations, cardiology fellows, and an attending physician.

Patient Care Associates are expected to work rotating shifts, including daytime, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Shifts may consist of 12-hour durations, with the possibility of a mix of 8-hour and 12-hour shifts.

All selected candidates will undergo a mandatory training program. This paid training spans two weeks, primarily during weekdays and daylight hours, combining virtual and in-person sessions. Attendance is required for the entire training duration.

A one-day training session is available on Saturdays for those who have completed a clinical rotation in a hospital or possess specific transferable inpatient/hospital experience.


The Patient Care Associates provide essential patient care and support departmental services in line with established policies and procedures.

This role will be guided by nurses and/or physicians to ensure the highest standards of patient care are upheld at all times.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients, and monitoring blood glucose levels, as well as taking vital signs, performing simple dressings, EKGs, bladder scans, and specimen collections.

Patient Care Technician – Lead:

3 years of healthcare experience required.

Key Responsibilities:


Must consistently perform core nursing assistant duties, including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, and repositioning patients), as well as point of care testing (including blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs), and clean catch/mini catheter urine collection.

Additionally, perform simple dressings, 12 lead EKGs, bladder scans, and all specimen collections.

All competencies must be achieved.

Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.

Establish and maintain professional and respectful interpersonal relationships.


Contribute to universal unit activities, including responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

Receive feedback constructively and take action to enhance knowledge, skills, and performance.

Demonstrate effective communication with all members of the healthcare team.

Understand cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions.

Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures related to patient care and hospital information.

Comply with safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions.

Document in the medical record according to established procedures.

Perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner.

Complete departmental clerical functions as needed.

Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
