Job Overview

NNL is in search of a seasoned chemical engineer to join our Materials Manufacturing division within the Fuel and Poison Materials (FPM) unit. This division is dedicated to the research and evaluation of nuclear fuel materials, encompassing test design, specimen fabrication, manufacturing development, and characterization.

Our key objectives include delivering fuel systems that enhance core performance while improving quality and reducing costs. The FPM unit oversees several development contracts with external partners to fulfill this mission. This environment is dynamic and innovative, covering all aspects from development to laboratory and factory deployment. The skills required and developed here span a wide range of capabilities, significantly impacting the program.


Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers, laboratory personnel, facility staff, and compliance organizations to facilitate and execute test programs.
  • Develop and fabricate unique material systems, including small-scale production demonstrations and factory installations, testing, and deployment.
  • Establish and implement optimized process parameters, leading to small-scale production demonstrations and factory testing and deployment.
  • Plan, design, model/analyze, manufacture, and deploy laboratory equipment, which includes nuclear, chemical, mechanical, structural, and electrical components and systems.
  • Document progress, analyze results, and present findings as necessary.
  • Occasional travel to domestic vendors (approximately 3 to 6 times per year).

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in engineering or a science-related field, along with 6 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with 4 years of relevant experience; or a PhD with 1 year of relevant experience; or equivalent qualifications in nuclear operations.


Preferred Qualifications

This position is ideal for engineers focused on the research, development, and deployment of equipment and facilities for the innovative production of nuclear materials, components, and systems.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • BS, MS, or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in materials science, control systems, and chemical engineering.
  • Familiarity with data analytics, statistical design of experiments, and machine learning.
  • Proficiency in software programming, particularly in LabVIEW and Python environments.
  • Experience in core material and core manufacturing technical areas.
  • Oversight experience with core material vendor contracts and production.

Pay Range

The annual salary for this position ranges from $92,000 to $145,200. Salary information is provided as a general guideline and is based on candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.


Additional Information
