Job Responsibilities
The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a dedicated Poultry Grader to oversee operations in poultry processing facilities. The key responsibilities include:
- Applying USDA grading standards and ensuring compliance with government regulations.
- Monitoring and documenting all grading and inspection activities.
- Traveling to various facilities as required, including potential weekend and holiday shifts.
This role is funded through user fees for grading services, and candidates may be eligible for additional compensation for night shifts and overtime.
Essential Qualifications
While experience in manufacturing, quality assurance, or agricultural practices is advantageous, it is not mandatory. Candidates should possess:
- The ability to learn federal and state regulations related to poultry grading.
- Strong reading skills to interpret USDA and state manuals.
- Basic mathematical abilities and attention to detail.
- A high school diploma or GED.
Employment Conditions
Applicants must be able to obtain a USDA Poultry Grading License after completing at least 160 hours of on-the-job training. The role demands physical stamina to work in environments with varying temperatures, slippery surfaces, and high noise levels, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly. Flexibility to work in different facilities during emergencies is required. A valid driver's license with a responsible driving record is also necessary.
Additional Considerations
Relevant education, training, and experience that demonstrate the necessary skills in poultry science and USDA grading standards will be beneficial.
