Job Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Accounting Assistant to join our team at the Grand Rapids Housing Commission. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing daily accounting tasks that will support the financial department and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Reconcile monthly statements and transactions to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Conduct routine data entry for accounting records, including managing accounts payable, billing, and accounts receivable.
  • Track, collect, and receipt payment from repayment agreements, ensuring timely and accurate processing.
  • Notify the Housing Choice Voucher department of missed repayment payments promptly.
  • Run and analyze monthly repayment agreements reports to monitor and manage payment statuses.
  • Send notice of overdue payments to clients, ensuring clear communication and follow-up.
  • Copy, scan, and file records related to office activities, business transactions, and other relevant matters.
  • Research and resolve unapplied or unidentified cash receipts, reconcile payments and shortages, and maintain auditable records.
  • Utilize office equipment to obtain information and process relevant paperwork.
  • Adhere to Commission standards regarding the ethical, responsible, and appropriate use, care, and safeguarding of Commission materials, supplies, resources, and other assets.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or possession of a certificate of equivalence of High School Achievement (GED) and at least two (2) years' experience with emphasis on accounting, finance, or related experience.
  • Good knowledge of general office practices and procedures, including business English, grammar, and arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of Housing rules, regulations, HUD procedures, and policies.
  • Ability to treat callers, customers, and visitors with unfailing courtesy, attentiveness, and a professional attitude.
  • Ability to operate computer equipment, software packages (i.e., Microsoft Office Suites), and general office machines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
  • Ability to accurately and completely document in writing appropriate events and activities.
