Position Overview

Conemaugh Miners Medical Center is in search of a Nursing Student Extern. Under the guidance of the Nurse Manager and in partnership with the Patient Care Team, this role involves assisting with the daily care of patients and their families. The extern will engage in various patient care tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). This position allows for the practice of skills to the fullest extent permitted by organizational policies and within legal frameworks. The extern will provide care tailored to the developmental needs of the patient population served.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the mentorship of the RN Preceptor, particularly in areas related to assessment, judgment, and education:

  • Contribute to the Patient Care Team's delivery of personalized, efficient care, respecting patients' spiritual and cultural backgrounds.
  • Assist in patient assessments throughout their stay and engage in discharge planning while fostering a therapeutic relationship with patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Support the development of individualized patient care plans.
  • Communicate patient status, escalate issues when necessary, and anticipate situations that could lead to adverse outcomes.
  • Adhere to the established care plan and collaborate with Patient Care Team members, including RNs, LPNs, Nursing Assistants, Unit Clerks, and Ancillary Departments.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all patient, hospital, and employee-related information.
  • Observe, document, and report patient behaviors and needs accurately, referring issues beyond personal capability.
  • Provide emotional support to patients and their families.
  • Assist with personal hygiene tasks and feeding as needed.
  • Orient patients and families to their surroundings, including room amenities and unit procedures.
  • Support the execution of patient treatments and diagnostic procedures as directed.
  • Record intake and output, as well as vital signs, in the electronic health record system.
  • Safely transport patients with dignity.
  • Address inquiries from patients, families, and visitors courteously and promptly, referring to appropriate staff when necessary.
  • Assist the care team in implementing the care plan.
  • Collect specimens as instructed.

  • Practice hand hygiene consistently.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED; must be a senior student in good academic standing at a College or School of Nursing with a QPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Two letters of recommendation from current nursing instructors are required.
  • Must be entering the senior year of nursing education.
  • CPR certification is mandatory.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Ability to understand and apply age-specific patient care needs.
  • Proficient in demonstrating and executing all core and job-specific competencies.
  • Capability to apply technical skills while exhibiting appropriate interpersonal skills.
