Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a senior optical professional, this role provides ophthalmic sales, dispensing, and related services to patients and non-patients of Kaiser Permanente. The successful candidate will serve as an informational resource for patients' eyewear needs, ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Determine patients' occupational, lifestyle, and cosmetic needs, advising and recommending lens style, color, and material, and frame shape, color, and material.
  • Provide measurements, such as pupillary distances, segment heights, lens base curves, and frame size, for spectacle fabrication using PD rulers, pupilometers, and lens clocks.
  • Apply principles of size, thickness, and power in selecting proper eyewear, considering the impact of different lens indexes and recommending alternatives.
  • Provide ophthalmic eyewear services by selling, fitting, ordering, dispensing, adjusting, and repairing spectacles.
  • Measure and shape lenses and adjust frames using ophthalmic equipment, including lens edgers, hand edgers, lensometers, frame warmers, and precision hand tools.
  • Inspect patients' eyewear using ANSI Z80.1 standards and tolerances, perform quality check functions, review patients' previous prescriptions, identify questionable changes, and take appropriate action.
  • Follow through on emergency orders by calling orders into the Optical Lab and ensuring lens and frame availability.
  • Perform limited Contact Lens services and refer patients with problems to the proper department.
  • Determine patient concerns, recommend actions to be taken, discuss solutions with Optical Administration as needed, and follow through with resolutions.
  • Attain KP Optical sales goals.
  • Maintain attractive frame and lens displays by arranging, cleaning, and changing them on a regular basis.
  • Maintain clinic frame inventory status by ordering, pricing, and placing stock on frame boards.
  • Keep track of backorder products and take action as necessary.
Requirements:
  • Experience: Six (6) months of contact lens and optical dispensing experience.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent combination of education (lesser) and experience may be considered in lieu of requirements.
  • License, Certification, Registration: N/A
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multiple issues effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to educate patients and staff on ophthalmic dispensing principles, including spectacle lens geometry and lifestyle dispensing.
  • American Board of Opticianry Certified (ABOC) by the American Board of Opticianry (ABO).
  • Post-high school coursework/training in Ophthalmic Optics.
