Preschool Speech and Language Specialist

The Elkhart County Special Education Cooperative (ECSEC) encompasses several community schools in North Central Indiana. The administrative offices are dedicated to providing support and resources for special education services.

POSITION OVERVIEW: This role focuses on the assessment and treatment of speech, language, and auditory challenges by executing the following responsibilities:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: To excel in this position, an individual must competently fulfill each essential duty.

  • Conduct screenings for speech, language, and hearing.
  • Assess and diagnose speech, language, and hearing abilities in relation to educational, medical, social, and psychological factors.
  • Design, implement, and oversee therapeutic programs aimed at enhancing communication skills for individuals with delays.
  • Provide guidance and support in speech and language therapy to improve outcomes for individuals with disabilities.
  • Review student records to gather necessary background information prior to evaluations.
  • Administer, evaluate, and interpret specialized assessments for speech, language, and hearing.
  • Create tailored educational plans to address the unique needs, interests, and capabilities of students.
  • Conduct evaluations in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Report on progress towards individualized education program (IEP) goals regularly.
  • Participate in case conferences as per established guidelines.
  • Review and assess treatment plans in relation to IEP objectives.
  • Maintain accurate records as mandated by law and policy.
  • Engage in professional development through meetings and conferences.
  • Instruct individuals on self-monitoring their speech and provide strategies for skill practice.
  • Act as a consultant for educators and support staff to foster speech and language development within the classroom.
  • Submit Medicaid claims for eligible services provided.
  • Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team for assessments and program development.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must possess appropriate certifications as required by the Indiana Department of Education.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Proficient in preparing written documentation and correspondence.
  • Effective communication skills with students, parents, and educational staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to organize and plan effectively; demonstrates good work habits.
  • Capable of resolving practical issues and making informed decisions.
  • Other qualifications as determined by the Governing Council.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position operates during the school year, requiring 20 hours per week. Daily hours may vary.

COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
