Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Railroad Conductor and Switchman to join our team at Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad. As a Conductor and Switchman, you will be responsible for controlling and coordinating train movements, switching railcars, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our rail network.

Key Responsibilities
  • Train Operations: Control and coordinate train movements, switching railcars, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our rail network.
  • Switching Operations: Switch railcars, whether in the yard of a railroad, industrial plant, or similar location, to facilitate the unloading and loading of railcars in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively with train dispatchers, yardmasters, and other crew members to ensure smooth train operations.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of train movements, railcar numbers, origin, destination, and cargo.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform minor repairs to couplings and air hoses and report any equipment requiring major repairs.
Requirements
  • Education: High school education or general education (GED)
  • Experience: Previous experience in railroad operations or a related field
  • Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents, write routine reports, and communicate effectively
  • Certifications: Must be able to pass and obtain all required certifications and reporting
  • Physical Demands: Ability to walk on uneven terrain, work outdoors in all weather conditions, and ride on the side of railcars for extended periods
Working Conditions

This is a physically demanding role that requires working in a fast-paced environment with variable hours, up to 12 hours per day, in compliance with federal hours of service regulations.
