Job Summary

As a Perioperative Nurse First Assistant, you will provide evidence-based nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. Your expertise will be utilized to assist surgeons with dissection, retraction, and wound closure. You will also be responsible for maintaining a safe environment, prioritizing tasks, and collaborating with the healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides hemostasis and wound exposure, handles tissue to reduce the potential for injury, sutures tissue, and applies dressings to the wound under the direction of the surgeon.
  • Utilizes the nursing process and functions as the patient advocate for the patient's plan of care based on an accurate/concise patient assessment.
  • Assists with surgical procedures, including open heart surgery, and maintains aseptic techniques in the perioperative setting.
  • Documents accurate and complete sponge, needle, sharps, and instrument counts, and completes accurate and concise documentation.
  • Collaborates with anesthesia providers in delivering nursing care to patients requiring anesthesia.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current registration to practice in the state where work is being performed.
  • Successful completion of RNFA program and internship that meets AORN's Standards for RN First Assistant Programs criteria.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required and CNOR certification maintained as current status.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of operating room experience in both the scrub and circulating roles as an RN.
