This position is only for individuals currently enrolled or graduated from Miami Animation and Gaming International Complex (MAGIC) at Miami Dade College.


SUMMARY


At the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, we are committed to providing students from Miami-Dade County's Title 1 schools with the tools and knowledge necessary for college success and STEM careers. Our program provides a comprehensive four-year experience that combines academic support, college counseling, and immersive STEM learning opportunities. By providing these resources and experiences, we aim to inspire and prepare students to excel in higher education and pursue fulfilling careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.


We seek a passionate and skilled Video Game Design Educator to inspire and guide our students on their path to video game design or technology. This role involves teaching engaging video game design curriculum, mentoring students, and fostering a collaborative learning environment. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in game development and a commitment to empowering young minds. The video game design educator will deliver lessons on video game design and college readiness to our students on Saturdays. Collaborating with program staff and community partners, they will deliver curriculum and align the curriculum with student needs. In addition to teaching, educators provide academic guidance and support, fostering a positive learning environment. Successful candidates possess strong subject matter expertise, exceptional communication skills, and a passion for inspiring young minds. Educators must have a deep commitment to mentoring students and the ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and implement engaging video game design curriculum using Unity, Microsoft, and Visual Basic software.
  • Guide students through the game development process, from concept to completion.
  • Incorporate college and career readiness components into the curriculum.
  • Serve as a positive role model, providing guidance and support to a diverse group of high school students.
  • Foster a supportive learning environment that encourages student exploration and critical thinking.
  • Guide students through the project development process, from ideation to presentation.
  • Deliver college readiness workshops and provide counseling to prepare students for higher education.
  • Equip students with the skills and knowledge to successfully complete and showcase their projects.
  • Maintain a safe and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Effectively manage student behavior and ensure adherence to program policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in biweekly staff meetings.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative team atmosphere.
  • Required to participate in a mandatory overnight camping trip in January or February to foster strong relationships with students.
  • Strongly encouraged to attend college campus tours during the week. Flexibility is provided for work or school conflicts.


MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

  • Currently enrolled or graduated from Miami Animation and Gaming International Complex (MAGIC) at Miami Dade College.
  • Preferably: Minimum 2 years of mentoring/coaching experience, preferably with diverse student populations.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in Unity, Microsoft, and Visual Basic game development software.
  • Strong understanding of game design principles and development pipelines.
  • Strong academic foundation with the ability to effectively deliver engaging and informative lessons based on provided curriculum.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with students from diverse backgrounds, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in leveraging technology to enhance student learning and engagement.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to provide effective college and career guidance to students.
  • Ability to conduct workshops and deliver presentations on various topics.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills to address student challenges and find effective solutions.
