Ophthalmology Patient Access Representative II

As a Patient Access Representative II at University Hospitals, you will play a vital role in providing comprehensive administrative support to our world-renowned healthcare team. In this highly visible role, you will serve as the first point of contact for patients, exemplifying personal warmth, patient engagement, and professionalism. Your primary responsibilities will include interviewing, registering, and instructing patients in a face-to-face setting or on the telephone, ensuring accurate and timely entry of medical, demographic, insurance, financial, and business data. You will also prepare standard patient materials, maintain confidential health records, process physician orders, and schedule patients. Additionally, you will identify and communicate the need for interpreter services, provide patient education regarding third-party coverage and liabilities, and communicate possible payment options. You will be responsible for collecting, posting, and balancing co-pays, deductibles, and other patient payments, as well as performing various additional support and backup functions within the department. You will also help mentor new hires and maintain expertise in PAS legal and compliance requirements. Key Responsibilities:
- Interview, register, and instruct patients in a face-to-face setting or on the telephone
- Enter and validate medical, demographic, insurance, financial, and business data in a timely and courteous manner
- Prepare standard patient materials, including forms, labels, brochures, surveys, etc.
- Maintain confidential health records, process physician orders, and schedule patients
- Identify and communicate the need for interpreter services
- Provide patient education regarding third-party coverage and liabilities
- Communicate possible payment options and connect patients to financial counselors as needed
- Collect, post, and balance co-pays, deductibles, and other patient payments
- Perform various additional support and backup functions within the department
- Help mentor new hires
- Maintain expertise in PAS legal and compliance requirements
Requirements:
- High School Equivalent/GED (Required)
- Associate's Degree or progress towards degree (Preferred)
- Medical Terminology (Preferred)
- 2+ years experience in patient registration, scheduling, banking, office, or related medical field using computers (Required)
- Bachelor's degree accepted in lieu of 1 year of work experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic knowledge of third-party payer and managed care insurance requirements
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology
- Demonstrated ability to use PCs and Microsoft Office suite
- Experience using clinical computer systems
- Detail-oriented and organized, with good analytical and problem-solving ability
- Notable client service, communication, and relationship-building skills
- Ability to function independently and as a team player in a fast-paced environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and excellent spelling
