The Veterinary Technician plays a crucial role in providing care for both clients and patients while supporting the veterinarian in various tasks.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be a certified or seasoned veterinary technician with a minimum of three years of experience in the field. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential. Proficiency in English is required, along with basic computer skills. The ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment is necessary. Candidates should be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for extended periods, and maintaining legible documentation. A customer-focused attitude and a friendly demeanor are vital. A professional appearance is expected, with scrubs provided by the employee. Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends, is required. The technician must be punctual and reliable. Responsibilities include administering injections, monitoring vital signs, and safely restraining animals for examinations and treatments. The technician should be adept at providing treatments and medications via different routes, including intravenous, oral, and subcutaneous. The ability to work independently and collaboratively is essential. New hires will undergo a 90-day probationary period, during which employment may be evaluated by management. All requirements are subject to change at the employer's discretion.
Reports to: Head Technician & Hospital Manager
DUTIES OF THE TECHNICIAN:
- Prepare and manage patient records and consent forms
- Admit and discharge patients
- Present invoices and prepare cost estimates for services
- Handle incoming calls professionally
- Maintain health and rabies certificate files
- Welcome clients with a friendly attitude
- Dispense medications, pet supplies, and food
- Accurately invoice prescriptions and maintain inventory
- Update and manage client and patient files
- Perform closing procedures at the end of the day
- Carry out additional duties as assigned
- Review vaccination records and prepare vaccines in accordance with protocols
- Assist the veterinarian in medical procedures with proper restraint techniques
- Support surgical procedures while adhering to aseptic techniques
- Operate and maintain medical equipment
- Conduct routine laboratory tests and analyses, including hematology and microbiology
- Prepare samples for external laboratory testing
- Monitor patients during anesthesia
- Induce anesthesia and intubate patients as needed
- Administer treatments and injections as directed by the veterinarian
- Initiate emergency protocols when necessary
- Maintain accurate pharmacy records and logs for controlled substances
- Perform radiographic imaging and develop images
- Measure and record vital signs, including temperature and pulse
- Conduct dental cleanings and oral health assessments
- Perform skin and ear cytologies
- Carry out urinary and venous catheterizations
- Complete ear cleanings and nail trims
- Execute other duties as assigned
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The position is based in a small animal hospital, involving both front and back office duties with significant client interaction. There is exposure to x-rays and anesthetic gases, with appropriate safety measures in place. The role may involve contact with zoonotic diseases and potentially hazardous materials.
