Department Overview
The Bass Cancer Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases offers comprehensive care, integrating both inpatient and outpatient services.
The inpatient unit consists of 49 beds, divided into two specialized areas:
- **PCU 500**: A 25-bed unit dedicated to inpatient Hematology and Oncology, where patients are treated for new cancer diagnoses and ongoing therapies.
- **PCU 520**: A 24-bed unit focused on Stem Cell Transplant, catering to patients with metabolic and genetic disorders, alongside those undergoing various transplant procedures.
Additionally, the Bass Center features an outpatient clinic, a procedure room equipped for general anesthesia, onsite laboratory services, a fully operational infusion center, and a specialized pharmacy.
Position Summary
This role encompasses the essential functions and responsibilities of a Clinical Nurse Specialist, a Master's Degree-prepared advanced practice Registered Nurse. Key responsibilities include:
- Delivering care to patients with complex health conditions within a designated clinical specialty.
- Employing advanced clinical skills for patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation.
- Utilizing theoretical and clinical expertise to support healthcare providers and patients in achieving optimal health outcomes.
- Establishing and implementing nursing practice standards.
- Acting as a consultant and resource for other healthcare professionals.
- Facilitating a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to patient care.
- Coordinating consultations and referrals as necessary.
- Encouraging research initiatives to enhance clinical nursing practices.
The following functions represent typical duties performed by individuals in this role:
- Reviewing patient care plans for compliance with established standards and collaborating with staff to develop effective assessment tools.
- Demonstrating expertise in daily patient care and guiding staff in the nursing process.
- Implementing and assessing therapeutic nursing interventions tailored to individual patient needs.
- Planning and delivering care for complex patient issues.
- Collaborating with nursing leadership and researchers on quality improvement initiatives.
- Creating and revising nursing care plans that align with multidisciplinary approaches.
- Maintaining and sharing specialized knowledge and skills relevant to the clinical area.
- Providing consultative services within nursing and to other disciplines for clinical research planning and evaluation.
- Participating in quality improvement programs and monitoring care standards.
- Delivering direct patient care with a focus on safety and ethical standards.
- Offering consultative support to patients, families, and healthcare staff.
Candidates must possess a combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, including any required licenses or certifications.
Education: Master's degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in a related field.
License/Certification: CA Registered Nurse (RN), CNS - Clinical Nurse Specialist certification from the California Board of Registered Nursing.
