Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join our IN-PATIENT Bass Center team as a per diem APP. We are looking for an Advanced Practice Provider (which includes Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants) to cover both our Stem Cell Transplant and Oncology units as part of our new Resource APP team in the Bass Center. At least one year of SCT, Oncology and/or ICU APP experience preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate and treat patients with acute, chronic complaints and health maintenance concerns related to specialty, according to written standardized procedures.
• Obtain complete histories and perform pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings on new and return patients.
• Perform or request and evaluate diagnostic studies as indicated upon evaluation of the patient.
• Administer, order, furnish and prescribe medications.
• Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products.
• Order physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations and nursing services.
• Perform designated procedures after demonstrated competency, according to written standardized procedures where applicable.
• Obtain informed consent, as indicated.
• Initiate arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges and complete appropriate paperwork.
• As directed by the supervising physician, enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and order the necessary tests and medications.
• After appropriate training, assist the supervising physician in the operating room. The RN First Assistant directly assists the surgeon and practices under the supervision of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase. The RN First Assistant must adhere to standardized procedures and not concurrently function as a scrub nurse.
• Recognize and consider age-specific needs of patients.
• Effectively communicate and interact with patients, families, staff and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.
• Recognize situations which require the immediate attention of a physician, and initiate life-saving procedures when necessary.
• Facilitate the coordination of patient and outpatient care and services as needed.
• Facilitate collaboration between providers and coordination of community resources.
• Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and clinical policies and procedures.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
• Provide and coordinate patient teaching and counseling.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or above from an accredited college or university for Physician Assistant (PA) role.
• Master's or doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited college or university for Nurse Practitioner (NP) role.
• Licensure as a Physician Assistant (PA) in the State of California for PA role.
• Certification as a Physician Assistant (PA) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) for PA role.
• Certification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the State of California for NP role.
• National Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) from an agency accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) for NP role.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) for both PA and NP roles.
• An individual Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license issued by the United States DEA for Schedule II-V controlled substances, required only if prescribing controlled substances to outpatients for both PA and NP roles.
• Additional board certification(s) may be required by certain services/departments for both PA and NP roles.
