Overview

UIC Technical Services is seeking a skilled Emergency Vehicle Technician. This role involves executing a range of specialized tasks related to both minor and major mechanical servicing and repairs of emergency response vehicles. The technician will focus on the inspection and maintenance of critical systems including brakes, suspension, wheels, hubs, hydraulic systems, and steering mechanisms, as well as servicing fire trucks, aerial equipment, and various fire apparatus.

Key Responsibilities

The ideal candidate must hold current certifications from the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) in the following areas:

  • ASE Certifications:
    • T2 Truck, Diesel Engines
    • T3 Truck, Drive Train
    • T4 Truck, Brakes
    • T5 Truck, Suspension and Steering
    • T6 Truck, Electrical Systems
  • EVT Certifications:
    • F1 Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus
    • F2 Design & Performance Standards of Fire Apparatus
    • F3 Fire Pumps and Accessories
    • F4 Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems

Essential functions include:

  • Conducting inspections and repairs on critical vehicle systems such as brakes and hydraulic systems.
  • Performing routine maintenance and repairs on emergency response vehicles.
  • Executing repairs on various fire department vehicles including pumpers, aerial devices, and tankers.
  • Following established technical manuals for repairs and services.
  • Undertaking major repair tasks, including disassembly and cleaning of components.
  • Understanding and utilizing technical manuals and schematics for accurate diagnosis and repair.
  • Knowledge of NFPA standards related to fire apparatus.
  • Providing technical guidance to fellow mechanics.
  • Documenting and maintaining records of repairs performed on emergency vehicles.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Required ASE & EVT level II certifications along with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire suppression systems.
  • Valid State issued Class B CDL and ability to obtain a forklift license.
  • Successful completion of a DOT regulated pre-employment medical examination and drug screening.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software suite is preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to perform physical tasks such as bending, squatting, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Capability to work with power tools and in environments with moving machinery.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and around vehicle fluids.
