Job Goal:
  • To assist the special education services teacher in delivering instructional and support services aimed at maximizing student success.

  • To provide support in small group instruction.
  • To aid in the preparation and organization of educational materials.

Qualifications:
  1. Associate's degree or 48 semester hours from an accredited institution or a passing score on the ACT WorkKeys Assessment.
  2. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment under relevant child protection legislation.
  3. Proven success in related work experience.
  4. Capacity to thrive in a demanding and high-pressure environment.
  5. Strong oral and written communication skills with students, parents, and colleagues.
  6. Effective interpersonal skills, emphasizing collaboration with diverse groups.
  7. Ability to identify and resolve issues as a constructive team member.
  8. Capability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  9. Physical strength and agility to fulfill job responsibilities.
  10. Proficiency in using technology for communication, data management, and report generation.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Exhibit support for the educational institution's vision, goals, and priorities.
  2. Deliver lessons or segments of lessons to individuals or groups, verifying the accuracy of work and assigning additional tasks as directed by the teacher.
  3. Assist students in utilizing books, computers, and classroom resources effectively.
  4. Help maintain routine records related to attendance, grades, and behavior as assigned.
  5. Facilitate the safe transfer of students in and out of various settings.
  6. Support students with all aspects of personal hygiene, including toileting and feeding.
  7. Assist with the mobility of students with special needs as required.
  8. Serve food and assist students during meal times.
  9. Support teachers in maintaining discipline and promoting positive student behavior.
  10. Manage student behavior, including crisis intervention when necessary, in accordance with established guidelines.
  11. Facilitate the use of mobility aids for students.
  12. Assist teachers during field trips by addressing students' physical needs and reinforcing learning experiences.
  13. Support bus drivers in maintaining discipline and addressing students' physical requirements.
  14. Provide assistance on special education transportation as directed by school leadership.
  15. Help teachers lead activities and serve as a play leader for designated student groups.
  16. Administer basic health care or first aid to special education students as directed by a school nurse.
  17. Supervise students in the absence of the primary teacher.
  18. Implement behavior management strategies as instructed by the teacher.
  19. Adapt instructional materials as needed to meet student needs.
  20. Participate in IEP meetings when requested.
  21. Transfer with students to different educational settings as needed.
  22. Perform duties with professionalism and courtesy.
  23. Maintain confidentiality regarding school and workplace matters.
  24. Proactively identify potential issues and opportunities for improvement.
  25. Collaborate effectively with supervisors and colleagues to achieve educational goals.
  26. Engage in professional development and uphold ethical standards in the workplace.
  27. Report unusual events or concerns to appropriate personnel promptly.
  28. Respond to inquiries and feedback in a constructive manner.
  29. Ensure timely and accurate submission of reports and records.
  30. Utilize and care for school resources responsibly and supervise others in their use.

Terms of Employment: Nine-month position in accordance with the Board's salary schedule.

Evaluation: Performance will be assessed according to the State Department of Education and/or local Board of Education policies regarding classified personnel evaluation.
