Key Responsibilities

Signal Support Systems Specialists are tasked with the integration of communication systems and networks. Their duties include:
  • Executing signal support functions and conducting unit-level maintenance on authorized communication equipment.
  • Installing, operating, and maintaining radio and data distribution systems.

Advanced personnel in this role may also supervise and train fellow Soldiers, ensuring the proper maintenance and installation of signal support systems and terminal devices. They provide essential technical assistance and training for automation and communications equipment, prepare maintenance and supply requests for unit-level signal support, and perform preventative maintenance checks and services on assigned vehicles.

Job Duties Include:
  • Maintaining radio and data distribution systems.
  • Providing signal support functions and technical assistance for computer systems.
  • Offering technical assistance and training for local area networks.
  • Conducting maintenance for equipment, terminal devices, assigned vehicles, and power generators.

Skills Acquired:
  • Understanding mechanical and electrical principles.
  • Learning preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Mastering line installation and wiring techniques.
  • Familiarity with communication security policies and procedures.

Desirable Attributes:
  • Interest in working with electronic equipment.
  • Problem-solving aptitude.

Through comprehensive training, individuals will gain the skills and experience necessary for a successful civilian career in companies specializing in communications and electronic equipment. Additional education and two years of electronics experience may lead to certification as an Associate Certified Electronics Technician.

Compensation and Benefits

Instead of incurring costs to acquire these skills, individuals will receive compensation while learning. In the Army National Guard, you will gain valuable job skills while earning a regular paycheck and qualifying for tuition assistance.

Training for Signal Support Systems Specialists consists of 10 weeks of Basic Training, where foundational Soldiering skills are taught, followed by 18 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) that combines hands-on and classroom instruction.

Requirements:
  • Military enlistment in the Army National Guard.
