Job Overview

In the Army National Guard, effective communication is vital for operational success, and the role of the Signal Support Systems Specialist is crucial in maintaining this flow of information.

Key Responsibilities

Signal Support Systems Specialists are tasked with the integration of communication systems and networks, executing signal support functions, and performing unit-level maintenance on authorized communication equipment. Their duties include the installation, operation, and upkeep of radio and data distribution systems.

Advanced team members take on supervisory roles, training fellow Soldiers, maintaining and installing signal support systems, and providing technical assistance for automation and communication devices. They also prepare maintenance and supply requests for unit-level signal support and conduct preventative maintenance checks on assigned vehicles.

Primary Duties Include:

• Maintaining radio and data distribution systems
• Performing signal support functions and providing technical assistance for computer systems
• Offering technical support and training for local area networks
• Conducting maintenance on equipment, terminal devices, assigned vehicles, and power generators

Skills Development

Through this role, you will acquire knowledge in:
• Mechanical and electrical principles
• Preventive maintenance procedures
• Line installation and wiring techniques
• Communication security policies and procedures

Desirable Skills

• A keen interest in working with electronic equipment
• Strong problem-solving abilities

This position not only equips you with essential skills but also prepares you for a rewarding civilian career in companies that specialize in communications and electronic equipment. Additional study and two years of electronics experience can lead to certification as an Associate Certified Electronics Technician.

Compensation and Benefits

Instead of incurring costs to acquire these skills, you will earn a salary while learning. In the Army National Guard, you will gain valuable job skills while receiving a regular paycheck and qualifying for tuition assistance.

Training for Signal Support Systems Specialists consists of 10 weeks of Basic Training, where foundational Soldiering skills are taught, followed by 18 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) that combines hands-on and classroom instruction.
