Overview: Under the guidance of the Director of Pharmacy, the Clinical Pharmacy Manager for Adult Services is accountable for overseeing the adult acute care clinical pharmacy operations and the medication safety program.
Key Responsibilities:
The responsibilities outlined in this section are fundamental to the role. Failure to fulfill these responsibilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, may lead to disqualification from the position.
- Coordinates, implements, and supervises all facets of adult acute care clinical pharmacy functions, focusing on therapeutic drug monitoring, clinical pathways, formulary management, pharmacoeconomics, and patient outcomes.
- Develops and enforces policies, practices, and procedures for adult acute care clinical pharmacy services, ensuring adherence to The Joint Commission and other regulatory standards.
- Manages the operational aspects of designated adult acute care pharmacy clinical service areas, aligning with hospital philosophies, goals, and objectives to guarantee the delivery of high-quality patient care and the growth of clinical services.
- Acts as a committee member and pharmacy representative for various committees, including but not limited to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Serves as a liaison to the College of Pharmacy for experiential and residency programs.
- Facilitates the creation, implementation, and maintenance of systems that foster positive patient outcomes through the use of safe, effective, and economical medication therapies.
- Addresses pharmacy-related patient care issues through effective communication with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Supervises the adult acute care clinical pharmacy team and the Investigational Drug Clinical Specialist.
- Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, coaching, evaluation, and disciplinary actions of staff.
- Engages in the professional development of staff through delegation, performance counseling, and timely completion of performance evaluations.
- Oversees the implementation, management, and reporting of the Medication Safety Program, integrating safety initiatives with clinical and operational department programs.
- Identifies opportunities for proactive enhancements in the medication-use system to bolster patient safety.
General Duties:
- Performs additional tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduate of an accredited pharmacy degree program. Completion of a PGY1 ASHP-accredited residency program is required. PGY2 ASHP-accredited residency program completion is preferred.
Experience: 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in a pharmacy environment is required. Experience in Adult Acute Care is preferred.
Licensure/Certifications: Licensed as a Doctor of Pharmacy (D.Ph.) by the relevant state board. Certification as a preceptor by the state board when eligible. Board of Pharmacy Specialties Certification (BPS) is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of current pharmacy-related regulations, requirements, and standards.
- Expertise in one or more clinical service areas.
- Strong supervisory skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Proficient in management skills related to planning, controlling, coordinating, and measuring departmental activities.
- Strong computer skills.
