Job Title: Subsurface Utility Engineering Specialist

At SGM, we are seeking a highly skilled Subsurface Utility Engineering Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for identifying and mapping complex subsurface utility installations, enhancing public safety and infrastructure development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with a team to tackle a wide variety of utility projects, utilizing specialized technologies such as electromagnetic line locators, ground penetrating radar, GPS, conventional survey, and vacuum excavation.
  • Read and interpret utility records, as-built and survey drawings, and construction plans to designate existing utilities using electromagnetic and geophysical technologies.
  • Oversee the operation of vacuum excavation trucks and their staff, performing test holes to expose utilities, and utilize appropriate traffic management procedures.
  • Represent the SGM in the field, communicating and coordinating with utility companies and project stakeholders.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent certificate.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to learn and understand new software.
  • High level of reading comprehension.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and walk long distances daily.
  • Must be able to occasionally travel out of town for multiday projects.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to pass a motor vehicle record check.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in a related field is a plus, but not required.
  • Familiarity with the ASCE 38 Standard and/or Colorado SUE Law.
  • OSHA certification and confined space entry certification are a plus but not required.
Environmental and Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to walk on varied terrain for long distances.
  • Work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work around moving traffic and within traffic control areas.
  • Comfortable using basic power tools.
  • Able to perform repetitive physical tasks.
