Key Responsibilities

As the Area Safety Manager, your responsibilities will include:
  • Conducting thorough evaluations of site conditions and contractual obligations, ensuring compliance with applicable US Federal and State regulations, as well as industry standards.
  • Creating a comprehensive Project and Office Safety, Health, and Environmental (SH&E) Management System aligned with HDR's Corporate SH&E program, covering policy development, assessment, planning, implementation, and management review processes.
  • Leading and supervising Project Safety Managers and Safety Coordinators to ensure adherence to project safety requirements.
  • Assisting Area Safety Coordinators in executing all SH&E-related tasks, including developing and implementing project-specific safety plans.
  • Establishing and maintaining SH&E training programs for all personnel in the area, including both field and office training sessions.
  • Overseeing safety and environmental compliance audits and inspections, managing corrective actions, and maintaining compliance records.
  • Tracking and reporting on safety performance metrics to management.
  • Coordinating environmental compliance sampling and testing as required by permits and regulations.
  • Reporting environmental non-compliance as necessary and maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Monitoring waste reduction initiatives within the organization.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by management.
  • This position may require travel within the designated area of responsibility.
  • Expected billability for this role is set at 70%.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Safety and Occupational Health, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing SH&E programs in various sectors.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA and ANSI standards.
  • Certification in relevant SH&E fields.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to contributing to our employee-owned culture.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities in managing a safety team.
  • Familiarity with federal and state safety regulations.
  • OSHA construction outreach trainer certification or the ability to obtain it.
  • Experience with safety management software.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of freight railroad safety standards with relevant experience.
