Job Overview

Position Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Technician plays a crucial role in the healthcare team by conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests. This position requires adherence to the standards set forth by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988.


Educational Requirements:

Candidates must possess at least an Associate of Science degree in a Biological, Physical, or Chemical Science, or a Clinical Laboratory Science program.


Experience and Training:

On-the-job training may be available for candidates who meet the educational prerequisites as outlined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988.


Knowledge and Skills:

The technician must qualify as Testing Personnel under the Personnel Standards of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988, working under the indirect supervision of the Clinical Laboratory Director. Knowledge should align with educational background and experience.


Safety Considerations:

YES
To ensure the health and safety of patients, staff, and visitors, certain roles are classified as 'safety sensitive.' This classification applies to positions where impaired performance could jeopardize health and safety.

Individuals engaged in the use of medical marijuana, even with a valid medical marijuana card, will not be eligible for employment in a 'safety sensitive' role.


Key Responsibilities:

The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for:

  • Conducting and reporting results of all diagnostic tests offered by Unity Health Laboratory.
  • Participating in Quality Assurance (QA), Infection Control (IC), Safety Quality Control Improvement (QCI), and proficiency testing programs as mandated by OSHA and CLIA 88.

This role requires understanding of patient demographics, including:

  • Neonates and infants (birth to one year)
  • Children and adolescents (one to 17 years)
  • Adults (18 to 65 years)
  • Geriatric patients (65 years and older)

Physical Requirements:

The position involves physical activities such as walking, bending, climbing stairs, and handling biohazardous materials while adhering to OSHA protective equipment guidelines.


Work Schedule:

This position may require night shifts.
