GENERAL DESCRIPTION

POSITION OVERVIEW - Court Services

The role involves performing essential protective services to ensure the safety and security of the courthouse environment. Responsibilities include managing the entry of individuals through security checkpoints, conducting thorough searches of courtrooms and surrounding areas for any potential threats, and overseeing the supervision and escorting of inmates present within the courthouse. Additional duties encompass maintaining accurate logs and serving various legal documents. The position may involve assignments across corrections, court services, or administrative divisions, with varying responsibilities in each area.

POSITION OVERVIEW - Corrections

This role also entails providing care and ensuring the security of inmates within the County Jail. Duties include processing inmates upon entry, conducting regular security checks, searching cells for contraband, managing incoming and outgoing mail, and transporting inmates as necessary. The officer will also attend to the needs of inmates and maintain logs of activities.

Salary will be determined based on prior credible service.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Court Services

• Manage the security screening process for all courthouse entrants.

• Conduct regular security checks of inmates in designated areas.

• Maintain order within the courtroom to prevent disruptions.

• Safeguard judges, court officials, witnesses, jurors, and all individuals present from any hostile actions.

• Supervise, escort, transport, and control prisoners effectively.

• Process prisoners and juveniles appropriately.

• Serve civil and criminal documents as required.

• Conduct comprehensive security searches of the courthouse premises.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Corrections

• Process inmates upon their arrival at the County Jail, including searching them and managing their personal belongings.

• Conduct regular security checks of inmates in assigned areas.

• Maintain detailed logs of inmate movements throughout the facility.

• Perform periodic searches of cells for contraband.

• Review incoming and outgoing mail for security purposes.

• Monitor individuals entering and exiting the jail premises.

• Supervise cleaning tasks in assigned areas.

• Transport inmates as required.

• Address special needs of inmates as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience
Preferred: Experience in public service or law enforcement-related activities.

Certifications/ Licenses
Required: Valid Virginia driver's license with a clean driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of civil and criminal law, court procedures, and regulations pertaining to the County Jail.
  • Ability to manage interpersonal relationships, follow instructions, and prepare accurate records and reports.
Additional Requirements
Must be a U.S. citizen, at least twenty-one (21) years old, and fulfill the minimum training standards established by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. A comprehensive criminal history background check is required with acceptable results. Must also be capable of performing the duties as outlined in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.
