Job Summary:

The City of Columbus seeks an Electrical Inspector I to conduct inspections of electrical service installations, construction, maintenance, and repair work for conformance with governing codes, requirements, and relevant ordinances.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inspections of electrical construction work completed or in progress to ensure that the methods, techniques, and materials used are in conformance with approved plans, relevant codes, requirements, and ordinances.
  • Review electrical work in the field with approved construction plans for conformance with the various electrical code requirements, standards, and ordinances.
  • Investigate complaints of improper electrical wiring, construction, repairs, or maintenance work and report findings to superior or the appropriate personnel.
  • Interpret, respond, and provide information to architects, engineers, contractors, and/or property owners concerning compliance and conformance with electrical code requirements, standards, and relevant ordinances.
  • Notify contractors, property owners, architects, and other applicable personnel of defective or substandard work performed by issuing rejection slips or notices.
  • Assist and/or cooperate with Fire Prevention personnel by checking the performance of "fire detection and prevention" systems.
  • Collect and gather data and evidence to assist in the prosecution of individuals that persist in violating applicable electrical codes, requirements, and relevant ordinances.
  • Attend required training sessions or classes in order to maintain a valid certification as an Electrical Safety Inspector.
  • Report on inspections daily and maintain applicable logs, records, and files concerning inspection activities.
  • Prepare correspondence and/or consult with builders, contractors, architects, property owners, and other applicable personnel on matters concerning inspection activities.
  • Operate City vehicle to travel to and from inspection sites.
  • May review and approve construction documents related to electrical systems for compliance with governing codes, requirements, and relevant ordinances.

Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate.
  • A letter of interim approval as an Electrical Safety Inspector from the State of Ohio may substitute for the above-referenced certifications, OR a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Trainee Certificate AND six (6) years of experience as a journeyman electrician or comparable experience may be substituted for the Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate.
  • When either the letter of interim approval or the Electrical Safety Inspector Trainee Certificate and experience is substituted, a valid State of Ohio Electrical Safety Inspector Certificate must be obtained by the completion of the probationary period.
  • Some positions may require possession of a valid State of Ohio certification as an Electrical Plans Examiner in order to review and approve construction documents related to electrical systems.
