Position Overview:

This role is for an Inclusive Education Specialist focused on elementary resource education.

Compensation:

Starting salary for certified special education teachers is $70,000.

Incentives:

A $10,000 hiring incentive for special education roles and an additional $3,000 bonus for late hires.

Core Responsibilities:

To provide tailored educational experiences and activities that enable special education students to achieve their fullest potential in intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development. Responsibilities include:

  1. Designing or adapting curricula and preparing instructional materials to suit diverse student abilities.
  2. Working in various capacities, including self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant settings as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and Certification:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required.

A valid teaching certificate in Texas with the necessary special education endorsements for the role.

Knowledge and Skills:

Understanding of the unique needs of students in the designated area.

Familiarity with the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and the Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal-setting and implementation process.

Ability to adapt instructional methods and curriculum for students with special needs.

Strong communication skills are essential.

Experience:

A minimum of one year of student teaching or an approved internship is required.

Key Duties:

Instructional Approaches:

  1. Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop IEPs through the ARD Committee process.
  2. Implement educational, therapeutic, or skill development programs for assigned students, maintaining documented evidence of preparation.
  3. Assess student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies and materials that reflect their needs.
  4. Effectively present subject matter in accordance with IEP guidelines, utilizing various instructional techniques and technologies.
  5. Work alongside classroom teachers to modify general curricula as necessary and assist special education students in mainstream classes.
  6. Regularly participate in ARD Committee meetings.
  7. Engage in the selection of instructional materials and resources.

Student Development:

  1. Conduct ongoing assessments of student progress through formal and informal evaluations.
  2. Provide or oversee personal care, medical assistance, and feeding of students as outlined in their IEPs.
  3. Take responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned, including sponsoring approved outside activities.
  4. Consult with district and external resources regarding the educational, social, medical, and personal needs of students.

Classroom Management:

  1. Create a learning environment that supports the physical, social, and emotional growth of students.
  2. Manage student behavior and implement disciplinary measures, including crisis intervention and physical restraint when necessary.
  3. Collaborate with classroom teachers on student behavior management strategies as per IEP requirements.
  4. Ensure the safety of students, equipment, and materials within the classroom.
  5. Oversee the work of instructional aides and volunteers.

Professional Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain open communication with parents, students, and colleagues through regular conferences.
  2. Foster professional relationships with all stakeholders.
  3. Engage in staff development opportunities to enhance job-related skills.
  4. Stay informed of and comply with all relevant regulations and policies pertaining to special education.
  5. Compile and maintain necessary reports and documentation as required.
  6. Participate in faculty meetings and contribute to staff committees as needed.

Additional Responsibilities:

Any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Supervisory Duties:

Oversee the work of instructional aides.

Physical and Mental Demands:

Utilize personal computers and instructional equipment. The role may require prolonged standing, frequent kneeling, bending, and lifting of students with physical disabilities, as well as managing behavior through physical restraint when necessary. Exposure to biological hazards may occur, and maintaining emotional control under stress is essential.
